DIALECTICAL RESPONSE
DIALECTICAL RESPONSE avatar

Do you want to encourage your students to interact with what they are reading in your classes? Do you wish students would spend time thinking about new material you introduce and how it connects with what they already know? One quick, effective AVID strategy that can help is “Dialectical Response.”

Dialectical Response (or double-entry journaling) is a “writing-to-learn strategy that facilitates students’ interaction with a text by enabling them to take intellectual risks while gaining familiarity and experience connecting with the text” (Shapiro & Cuseo 17-19).

For detailed information about Dialectical Response, visit our AVID Resources page in D2L.

Directions:

  • Login to D2L.
  • From the D2L homepage, go to RESOURCES.
  • Click on AVID Resources.
  • Click on CONTENT.
  • Go to Referenced AVID Resources.
  • Go to High Engagement Practices for Teaching and Learning.
  • See pages 17-19 of the eDocument (42-44 of printed document).

Please contact Lisa Martin if you have questions about using Dialectical Response or accessing the AVID Resources page in D2L.

D2L November 2022 Updates

Creator+ – Engage learners with professional interactive content in your courses | New

A new feature called Creator+ has been implemented into d2l! This is a user-friendly HTML5 Editor used to make more engaging content! As this is quite a large tool, another post was made detailing it in more detail. You may find it here:
https://ptcideas.com/2022/11/09/introducing-d2l-creator/

Awards – Share achievements with Public URL sharing for awards | New

Students can now share their awards with a Public URL directly from the Awards tool using the new Awards Sharing option.

The new method simplifies sharing a badge or certificate to showcase achievements. The user can create a public URL for an award, which can then be shared on a digital resume or social media profile, for example, LinkedIn.

To share an award using a public URL, a learner can navigate to the My Awards page, select the desired award, click the Share link, and then click Create Link.

Group/Section Management – Improved clarity when performing deletions of associated activities | Updated

This feature implements a change to the message users receive in the Delete Category dialog when deleting associated activities (i.e., Assignments and Discussions). The dialog now includes a count of how many assignments or discussions the user is deleting. Previously, this information was not clearly indicated to the user.

In addition, when users create a new Group Category and associated activities, then reach the Workspace Summary page, they are automatically returned to the Manage Groups page. Previously, users would have to re-click Save to return to Manage Groups.

Pulse – Personalize notifications for email and SMS | Updated

This feature builds upon the Personalize push notifications feature originally released in October. With the release of this feature, you will be able to choose which email or SMS notifications you receive by accessing settings directly from the Pulse app. Previously, you could only personalize email notifications through Brightspace.

Rubrics – Clarify grading criteria by editing text fields in assessed rubrics | New

Text fields in rubrics that have already been used for evaluation may now be edited. This feature is intended to let instructors correct spelling errors, clarify wording, and make other minor changes that do not impact the academic integrity of the rubric. Instructors still can’t make structural changes (such as adding evaluation levels or criteria), edit points, or add outcome alignments to assessed rubrics.

Previously, after an instructor used a rubric for an evaluation, the rubric was locked and couldn’t be edited. To make changes, instructors had to completely remove the rubric, make edits to a copy of the rubric, attach the copy of the rubric to the grade item, then redo all the assessments.

Introducing D2L Creator+
Introducing D2L Creator+ avatar

Hello everyone! If you attended the D2L Connection event in Newberry, you may have heard talk about a new feature coming to D2L called Creator+. I am happy to announce that Creator+ has now been deployed after some delays and is now accessible and available for use! As this is a large update, let's take a look at this new feature together and how we can use it!

What is Creator+?

Creator+ is the name used for an all new way to create more visually appealing and interactive content inside of D2L. It is a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) content authoring HTML5 editor similar to H5P with a more user friendly interface and shorter workflow while also losing some more in-depth functionalities that aren’t used very often.

Using it, we can create highly desirable, engaging, and delightful learning experiences in minutes. With easy-to-use tools and leveraging existing workflows, we can build dynamic content that appeals to the love of learning, improves comprehension, and achieves higher levels of engagement for instructors AND learners.

Creator+ Insert Element

Insert Element enables us to easily and seamlessly create dynamic content and chunk concepts following instructional design best practices. What do YOU think of when you see a blank white page (much like the one you are reading this on, ironically!) with some text on top? Exciting, engaging, and dynamic may not be at the top of that list. Functional? Sure. But we can do better!

When creating content in D2L, from ANY of the content editors, you may now select “Insert Element” from the “+” Menu to create brand new content that is formatted in a more engaging, visually appealing way. Let’s take a look at how Creator+ can take this bland-looking paragraph you are reading right now and spice it up a little!

From the revealed menu you can then select which type of content you’d like to add. To keep things brief, I will not be going over every single content type in this blog (though PD opportunities for Creator+ are on the way!) but feel free to try out all the options! For this example, I’m going to be using the “Callout” element, one designed to grab the attention of the reader for something very important that should be taken note of, a visual way of telling someone “HEY! This is GOING to be on the test, promise!” for example.

From the next window, I’m going to select what type of icon I want to be in my big new callout element. As this is a big update for us, I’m going to select “Jumbo”! Then enter my title, and my content before selecting “Preview” and then inserting my brand new content into my course.

“Joseph, that was way too easy, I just hit like two extra buttons, there is no way I’ve made that big of a difference” – You, (Probably).

We are all a little wrong sometimes, because with that little effort, we have transformed our boring paragraph into an accessible element that steals attention! Check it out below, is your eye drawn to the top paragraph first or the one we just made?

Pretty neat, right?

Again, this is only showing one of the new elements for this example and more will be added into the future! Feel free to test out ones that are interesting to you! Anyone can do it!

Creator+ Insert Practice

Earlier I did mention that Creator+ also allows the creation of interactive content! Let’s take a look, shall we?

Practices deepen comprehension and reinforce concepts using formative practice questions in Content HTML topics. To make one, you can select “Insert Practice” from the “+” menu in ANY of the HTML5 Content editors inside of D2L.

From here you will be able to choose which type of interactive item you would like to make (and eve more are on the way!). For the sake of this example, let’s do a “Fill in the Blanks” item.

From here you can follow precise on-screen instructions on how to make your new interactive content! Let’s make this about just how easy this was to make, shall we?

Once you are all done and insert the content into your course it will show off some of the fields you entered above. Select “save and close” and you are done, that’s it!

And behold, a brand new interactive item!

Please note, at this time, interactive items can NOT be linked to the grade book and should only be used as supplementary materials as that is what they are designed for!

These were some pretty basic examples of how we can use Creator+ but in the spirit of the functionality, I highly recommend you go out and test around with it to create content you are proud of! This has been designed to be fast, efficient, and easy to use and I hope you feel the same way! Again, more content types will be added to this moving forward and it is far from being a complete experience, so please reach out to me if you would like to give your feedback or if you have any questions!
