AVID Strategy: Think-Pair-Share
AVID Strategy: Think-Pair-Share avatar

  • This is a great, collaborative strategy that can be used in various disciplines.
    • It can be used in large or small groups and in online classes (in breakout rooms).
    • Implementation is easy. First, give students a question to answer, a problem to solve, or an assignment to read. Then, ask the students to THINK about their answers or the reading on their own. Next,
    • PAIR them with another classmate(s), and have them SHARE the answer with them. If you choose to do so, you can also have groups report out (SHARE) with the larger group.
  • For additional AVID teaching and learning strategies, please check out our AVID Resources page in D2L (Available from the D2L homepage, in the “Resources” drop-down menu).
  • If you have an AVID strategy you would like to get added to our Resources page, please reach out to Lisa Martin at Martin.L@ptc.edu.

KWLA — An AVID Strategy Helpful for Finals’ Prep
KWLA — An AVID Strategy Helpful for Finals’ Prep avatar

KWLA (Know, Want to Know, Learned, and Apply):  Using a KWLA strategy/worksheet prior to an assessment (like a final exam) in class can help instructors (and students) see what students already “know” about a topic and what they “want to know”/really need to study. After participating in your class/review session, the KWLA can help instructors assess what students have “learned” and if they are able to successfully “apply” the information. For a fillable KWLA worksheet that can be used in your classes, check out the “AVID Resources” page available through the Resources’ tab in D2L.
