Session Title:
Enhancing Online Instruction

Session Description:

Participants will learn how to apply Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR) strategies in an online course, with an emphasis on building a social presence for both instructor and student. Participants will discuss and analyze high-impact strategies that will increase student engagement and learning in the online environment. Participants who attend this session should already be familiar with the basic functionality D2L, including how to create a discussion board, post assignments, etc. This workshop is more effective if participants have some AVID background in WICOR strategies.

KWLA — An AVID Strategy Helpful for Finals’ Prep
KWLA — An AVID Strategy Helpful for Finals’ Prep avatar

KWLA (Know, Want to Know, Learned, and Apply):  Using a KWLA strategy/worksheet prior to an assessment (like a final exam) in class can help instructors (and students) see what students already “know” about a topic and what they “want to know”/really need to study. After participating in your class/review session, the KWLA can help instructors assess what students have “learned” and if they are able to successfully “apply” the information. For a fillable KWLA worksheet that can be used in your classes, check out the “AVID Resources” page available through the Resources’ tab in D2L.
